Vestibular Physiotherapy
in Adelaide for VERTIGO, DIZZINESS & BPPV

If you’ve ever experienced dizziness, vertigo, or that unsettling feeling that the world is spinning, you know how much it can disrupt your daily life.

At Health on Grange Physiotherapy in Adelaide, our vestibular physiotherapy services are designed to help you regain stability, improve confidence in movement, and get back to the activities you love — without the fear of losing your balance.

What is Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on assessing and treating conditions affecting the vestibular system, which is the part of the inner ear and brain that helps control balance, spatial orientation, and coordination.

When the vestibular system isn’t functioning properly, you may experience symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, or difficulty focusing your vision when moving.

Common Conditions We Treat

Our vestibular physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and management of a wide range of vestibular disorders, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): A common cause of vertigo triggered by specific head movements due to tiny crystals in the inner ear becoming displaced.
  • Vestibular Neuritis or Labyrinthitis: Inflammation of the inner ear or vestibular nerve causing sudden, severe vertigo.
  • Meniere’s Disease: Characterised by episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.
  • Post-Concussion Dizziness: Balance and spatial awareness issues following a head injury.
  • Chronic Dizziness or Imbalance: Persistent symptoms not linked to a single identifiable event.
  • Unilateral or Bilateral Vestibular Loss: Reduced vestibular function on one or both sides.

If you’ve been living with symptoms for weeks, months, or even years, vestibular physiotherapy can often help restore function and improve quality of life.

Is there a difference between Dizziness and Vertigo?

Dizziness and vertigo can feel similar, but they’re actually quite different. Dizziness is a general term people use to describe feeling light-headed, a bit “off balance,” or like the world around them is hazy and disorienting.

Vertigo, however, is much more specific — it’s the unmistakable sensation that you or the room around you is spinning, even though nothing is moving. Vertigo often points to an issue in the inner ear, also known as the vestibular system. Dizziness, on the other hand, can have many causes. It might be related to inner ear problems, reduced blood flow to the brain, neck issues, a concussion, or even emotional stress and anxiety.

Vestibular vertigo (from inner ear issues) makes up approximately 25%–34% of dizziness and vertigo cases in population studies. The proportion increases with age, reaching close to 50% in people aged 60 and older, but overall, it is below half for the general adult population1. If your symptoms tend to flare up or worsen when you move your head or body quickly, it’s quite possible the vestibular system is involved. In that case, getting a proper assessment is the first step toward feeling steady and in control again.

How Vestibular Physiotherapy Can Help

Vestibular physiotherapy aims to reduce dizziness, improve balance, and retrain your brain to compensate for vestibular deficits. Treatment often includes:

  • Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvres for BPPV:  Simple but highly effective techniques (e.g. Epley or Semont manoeuvres) to move displaced crystals in the inner ear.
  • Gaze Stabilisation Exercises: Improving your ability to maintain clear vision during head movement.
  • Balance Retraining:  Exercises to enhance stability while standing, walking, or moving on uneven surfaces.
  • Habituation Exercises: Gradual exposure to movements or positions that trigger dizziness, helping your brain adapt and reduce symptoms over time.
  • Postural Stability and Coordination Training: Improving muscle control to support safer movement.
  • Education and Self-Management Strategies: Understanding your condition, recognising triggers, and knowing how to manage flare-ups at home.
