BACK PAIN

Back problems are the third most common reasons for taking time off work behind the common headaches and colds and are also the second most common reason people go and see their GP.

Pain in the lower back is believed to affect 8 out of every 10 people at some stage of their life. This pain can be very debilitating and can affect our daily work and leisure activities to varying degrees. Lower back pain can also give referred symptoms into the buttocks, hips or down the whole leg.

Back Pain

What causes Back Pain?

Low back pain can be caused from many tissues being stressed and giving rise to symptoms. The joints, discs, ligaments, nerves and muscles are all pain-sensitive structures and so may give pain if stressed or injured. The onset of back pain may be sudden or more gradual where patients feel it begins for no reason. In both cases, symptoms need to be assessed and treated accordingly to prevent them worsening and leading to long-term problems.

Physiotherapy and Back Pain

Physiotherapy can help with your back pain and treatment will depend on the cause of the problem. Here at Health on Grange Physiotherapy, we aim to identify and fix the CAUSE of you problem as opposed to simply treating the symptoms of your pain. What this means is that our assessments are very in-depth as we look into the causative factors that are causing your pain. These factors may be from the hips, other areas of your spine or from various muscle imbalances that may be playing a part in your presentation.

Therefore, we do not believe there is one fix for back pain. Treatment at Health on Grange Physiotherapy is individualised to the patient depending on their presentation. We like to involve patients with their treatment for their back pain which means having a good understanding of their problem. This way, patients are able to know what will aggravate their back pain and more importantly, what will help.

Treatments may often consist of hands-on therapy including mobilisations and soft tissue massage. Also, a specific exercise programme which targets stability muscles around the spine ensures your spine is well supported and helps prevent recurrent episodes of back pain. We will also address other contributing factors that may hinder your recovery such as postural advice, muscle imbalances, and correct lifting techniques.
